Basic Obedience Class

Minimize
The Basic Obedience Class is a seven-week course that meets for one hour per week. The course focuses on these Basic Obedience cues:
  • Food Lure
  • Sit/Sit-Stay
  • Come
  • Down/Down-Stay
  • Heel
  • Loose-Leash Walking

The course will also address Problem Behaviors as needed such as jumping, digging, bolting, separation anxiety, and excessive barking. Housebreaking will be touched on if needed and handouts will be available to assist students.

Lea Treat employs a training technique known as “Positive Reinforcement”. It is designed to teach the dog that performing the desired behavior is rewarding for him/her. Another technique that will be used is called “Negative Punishment”, which means that failure to perform the requested cue will eliminate the possibility of earning the reward. Think of it this way: the “Positive” in Positive Reinforcement means “adding” something good. The “Negative” in Negative Punishment means “taking away” something the dog likes.

Lea avoids using painful or frightening techniques as these create a negative association with training and cause stress in the dog, which limits his/her ability to learn. Lea takes the necessary steps to ensure a fun, relaxed, positive and safe environment for both the dog and the owner. This creates an environment in which learning can occur for everyone. Meet the Trainer

“My love of animals, especially dogs, is the reason I became a dog trainer. I grew up always having animals around. I somehow felt a peaceful connection with them from the start. I find their different personalities and mannerisms to be endearing and highly entertaining!” – Lea Treat, owner of Rosetta Bone Canine Coaching

Lea Treat has lived in Atlanta since 1995. Prior to receiving her certification as a Dog Trainer, she earned an Associate of Science degree from Georgia Perimeter College. Her original intention was to become a Veterinary Technician, but she soon realized that her true interest and calling was more behavioral than medical. Since childhood, she believed being a dog trainer to a great job that everyone would want. It wasn't until later in life that she decided that she, too, could realize her dream. And, so she has.

She earned her certification as a Dog Trainer upon graduating from Animal Behavior College (ABC). ABC is an internationally recognized school that is approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education. The ABC program is one of the most comprehensive Obedience Instructor courses in the world and is designed to take up to one year to complete. The course includes an extensive text section, mandatory volunteer hours at a shelter and an apprenticeship. Lea completed the course requirements in seven months and graduated with honors. Through this program, she acquired a complete education in canine obedience training as well as an understanding of what motivates dogs to behave in certain ways. This education, and her genuine love of dogs, has given her the knowledge, experience and enthusiasm to train your best, four-legged friend using positive, stress-free and fun methods.

Lea has worked for UPS for 11 years and with dogs and their owners for many years as well. She loves observing how people interact with their dogs and how their dogs respond to them. Training dogs is truly her dream job. It is her personal goal to teach your dog to become a calm, well-mannered member of your family so that he/she may grow old with you in his/her forever home.
